What we do

Four fields — and what they mean day to day.

Integration, culture, human rights, meeting. That has been on the association's paper since 1987. This page says what actually happens when someone walks through the door on a Wednesday afternoon.

Support & advice

مشاوره و همراهی

The most common reason someone walks in for the first time is a letter. A decision from the Jobcenter, a deadline from the immigration office, a note from school. We read it with you, explain it in Dari, fill in whatever has to be filled in — and come along if that is what it takes.

Going through decisions and official post together, keeping an eye on deadlines
Filling in applications: Jobcenter, BAMF, housing benefit, child benefit, BAföG
Writing an objection when a decision is wrong
Accompaniment to appointments at authorities, school, landlord or doctor
School place, training, studies and recognition of certificates
Application documents, CV and job search
Looking for a flat: WBS, cover letters, sorting documents
Referral to lawyers and specialist advice centres

Culture

فرهنگ و هنر

In Berlin, Afghanistan is usually a news item. With us it is music, poetry, food and a festival in March. Cultural work here means showing the country that does not fit into the news item — and doing it in a way that lets the neighbours join in.

Nauruz — the Afghan New Year festival, every year around 21 March
Eid celebrations and holidays through the year
Literature and poetry evenings in Dari and in German
Music evenings: rubab, tabla, songs from Herat and Kabul
Film and discussion evenings about Afghanistan today
Dari and Pashto: passing language and script on to the next generation
Practising German in a group — without exam pressure
Rolled-up blank banners of coarse fabric leaning against a rough plastered wall, one roll in red

Human rights

حقوق بشر

Human rights work has been part of how this association sees itself for as long as it has existed. It is the uncomfortable part: it is about the situation in Afghanistan, about women and girls who have had education taken away from them, and about what refugees experience here. We keep that public.

Events and panels on the situation in Afghanistan
Making the rights of women and girls a topic — with those affected, not about them
Press and public relations work, statements, interviews
Networking with Berlin initiatives and migrant organisations
Practical solidarity with refugees: arriving, authorities, finding a footing

Meeting place

دیدار و همبستگی

Almost every other Afghan association in Berlin works by appointment. We do not. During opening hours the door is simply open. You can come because you need something — or because you want to drink tea and talk. Both count.

Open meeting place three days a week, no registration
Tea and conversation — even without a request
Self-help: people helping people with the same experience
Neighbourhood in the Reuterkiez: working with initiatives, schools and authorities
Explicitly open to Berliners without Afghan roots
Room for group meetings by arrangement

Everything we offer at a glance

The whole list.

No teaser, no selection: this is everything you can come to us for. If something is not on the list, ask anyway — usually we know someone.
