Who we are

خانه فرهنگ افغانستان

An Afghan self-help association in Neukölln — and an open house for everyone who lives here.

We advise Afghans in Berlin on everything that gets in the way of everyday life: authorities, school, work, housing. We make Afghan culture visible — Nauruz, music, literature. And we talk about human rights, even when that is uncomfortable. All of it voluntary, all of it in German and in Dari, since 1987.

You do not have to be Afghan to come in. Anyone who lives in the Reuterkiez, is curious or wants to help out is just as much meant.

What we do

Four fields. One place.

Pull open a row and you see what is actually behind it — not headlines, but what we really do on a Wednesday afternoon.

  • Understanding letters and official decisions — explained in Dari
  • Filling in applications: Jobcenter, BAMF, housing benefit, child benefit
  • Accompaniment to authorities, appointments and official meetings
  • School, training, studies and recognition of certificates
  • Looking for housing and work: documents, applications, phone calls
  • Referral to specialist services, lawyers and doctors

1987 → today

Almost four
decades.
All voluntary.
Without a break.

In 1987, Afghans in Berlin founded this association as self-help, because nobody else felt responsible. It has carried on ever since without interruption: advising people, organising festivals, speaking up. No funded project with an end date, no head office with an HR department. An association that simply never stopped.

The association's anniversary poster: a large 30 with photographs set into it, below it the line „30 Jahre Ehrenamtliche Integration, Kultur und Menschenrechtsarbeit“, on the right the association's logo and a calligraphy

Founded

Afghans in Berlin found the association as self-help — for their own community and for everyone who joins it.

30
Years — the poster

„30 Jahre ehrenamtliche Integration, Kultur und Menschenrechtsarbeit“ — thirty years of voluntary integration, culture and human rights work. That is what the association's own poster says about itself.

One voice

Ich liebe diese Menschen, SO zugewandt und freundlich. Viel Erfolg euch. :)

Five out of five stars — Hamid S.Review from 11 February 2021

The quotation is in German, because that is how it was written. It is the only public review we have. We would like more — but we do not invent any.
